Jacques Perissat pioneered laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the late 1980s, establishing minimally invasive surgery as a mainstream surgical approach. The principles developed for laparoscopic gallbladder surgery were extended to colon cancer (laparoscopic colectomy), rectal cancer, gastric cancer, and other malignancies — reducing recovery time, hospital stay, and morbidity compared to open surgery, with equivalent oncological outcomes in properly selected patients.
