J. Michael Bishop shared the 1989 Nobel Prize with Harold Varmus for the discovery that retroviral oncogenes are derived from normal cellular proto-oncogenes — genes that regulate growth and can be converted to cancer-causing oncogenes by mutation or aberrant expression. This landmark discovery established the genetic basis of cancer and has guided cancer drug development for over 40 years.
