Michael Issels led the pivotal EORTC 62961 randomized trial demonstrating that regional hyperthermia added to neoadjuvant chemotherapy significantly improves local progression-free survival in high-risk soft tissue sarcomas, establishing the highest level of evidence for clinical hyperthermia. His long-term follow-up data showing persistent survival benefits cemented hyperthermia as a guideline-recommended treatment for locally advanced soft tissue sarcoma. He has been instrumental in building the European evidence base for clinical hyperthermia.
