Tasuku Honjo shared the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of PD-1 and its role as an immune checkpoint. The anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapies derived from his work have become the backbone of cancer immunotherapy, benefiting millions of patients worldwide. His fundamental immunological discoveries enabled the most impactful class of cancer drugs in the 21st century.
