Jimmie Holland was a psychiatrist who founded the field of psycho-oncology and established the first psychiatric service in a cancer hospital at Memorial Sloan Kettering in 1977. She championed the idea of distress as the sixth vital sign and developed the Distress Thermometer adopted worldwide. Her work integrated psychological care into comprehensive cancer treatment.
