Henry Lynch

Henry Lynch was the founding pioneer who identified and characterized Lynch syndrome, formerly known as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer. His systematic documentation of cancer family syndrome through pedigree analysis established the hereditary basis of a major proportion of colorectal and endometrial cancers. He championed genetic counseling and cancer surveillance programs for Lynch syndrome families decades before the causative mismatch repair gene mutations were identified. His lifetime contributions fundamentally transformed the understanding of hereditary cancer risk.
