Henri Coutard was the first clinician to demonstrate that fractionated radiotherapy could cure laryngeal cancer without surgery, transforming treatment of head and neck malignancies. His systematic clinical application of fractionation principles at the Institut Curie in the 1920s-30s established the first cure rates for pharyngeal and laryngeal cancers using radiation. His work laid the clinical foundation for all modern fractionated external beam radiotherapy.
