Masanori Hatakeyama characterized the cagA bacterial oncoprotein of H pylori as a phosphotyrosine-dependent activator of SHP-2 signaling and established cagA as the first bacterial oncoprotein. His work at Tokyo has defined molecular mechanisms by which H pylori drives gastric carcinogenesis. His research bridges microbiology and cancer biology.
