Hashem El-Serag

Hashem El-Serag is the preeminent epidemiologist of hepatocellular carcinoma in the United States, whose work defined the shifting epidemiology of HCC from viral hepatitis toward NAFLD/NASH as the dominant etiology. His landmark studies showed that NAFLD-associated HCC can arise in non-cirrhotic livers, challenging traditional HCC surveillance paradigms. He has led large cohort studies quantifying HCC risk in NAFLD/NASH patients stratified by metabolic factors. His work established the public health imperative of HCC surveillance in NAFLD populations.
