👥Biography 个人简介

Harold Varmus, with J. Michael Bishop, discovered that cancer-causing oncogenes in retroviruses have normal cellular counterparts (proto-oncogenes) that become activated by mutation, overexpression, or translocation — a unifying principle of cancer biology for which they shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This discovery established that cancer is fundamentally a disease of altered normal genes and laid the groundwork for the entire field of oncogene-targeted therapy. He subsequently served as Director of the NIH and NCI, shaping US cancer research policy.
