👥Biography 个人简介

Harold Varmus, with J. Michael Bishop, shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering that viral oncogenes derive from normal cellular genes (proto-oncogenes), fundamentally changing our understanding of cancer as a genetic disease. This insight that proto-oncogenes become activated drivers of cancer growth forms the conceptual basis for all targeted oncology therapy. He served as NIH Director and NCI Director, shaping US cancer research policy. His contributions include founding the cancer genomics enterprise and championing open access to scientific research.
