Harold Varmus received the Nobel Prize for demonstrating that oncogenes originate from normal cellular genes (proto-oncogenes), fundamentally transforming understanding of cancer as a disease of gene regulation. His discovery that the Src oncogene has a cellular counterpart established the paradigm that cancer arises from alteration of normal growth control genes. As former NIH Director, he shaped cancer research policy for decades.
