Hans Clevers at the Hubrecht Institute discovered the Wnt pathway's central role in intestinal stem cell biology and colorectal cancer. He identified LGR5 as the intestinal stem cell marker, developed the organoid technology that has transformed cancer drug development and personalized medicine, and defined how aberrant Wnt/beta-catenin signaling drives colorectal carcinogenesis. His organoid platform is now used worldwide for cancer biology and drug testing.
