Angelita Habr-Gama is the pioneer of the watch and wait (W&W) approach for rectal cancer with complete clinical response after chemoradiation. Her landmark 2004 paper and subsequent series from Sao Paulo transformed thinking about organ preservation in rectal cancer. She co-founded the International Watch and Wait Database and has trained generations of colorectal surgeons.
