Guido Kroemer has made seminal contributions to understanding how autophagy regulates immunogenic cell death in cancer, demonstrating that autophagy-competent tumor cells release ATP as a danger signal during chemotherapy-induced cell death, recruiting dendritic cells and promoting anti-tumor immunity. His work showed that calreticulin surface exposure, a key immunogenic cell death signal, is modulated by autophagy status. He has systematically characterized autophagy biomarkers including LC3 puncta and p62/SQSTM1 degradation for clinical application. His integrative view of autophagy, apoptosis, and immune responses has shaped therapeutic strategies combining autophagy modulation with immunotherapy.
