Maura Gillison is a pioneer in defining HPV-associated head and neck cancer biology and has led de-escalation trials for locally advanced disease. Her epidemiologic and clinical research established the HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer entity as distinct from smoking-related disease. She leads multiple NCI-sponsored clinical trials in this space.
