Walter Gilbert shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Frederick Sanger for the development of DNA sequencing methodology. He isolated the lac repressor, coined the term exon, and proposed the RNA world hypothesis. He was a co-founder of Biogen and a leading figure in twentieth century molecular biology.
