Giampaolo Merlini is the world's foremost authority on AL amyloidosis, having dedicated his career to understanding amyloid fibril formation, organ pathophysiology, and treatment. He established the internationally recognized reference center for amyloidosis in Pavia and developed key staging systems and biomarker tools including NT-proBNP and serum free light chains for amyloidosis management. His foundational work underpins modern diagnosis and monitoring of AL amyloidosis.
