Gerry Bhatt

Gerry Bhatt investigates RB tumor suppressor pathway dysfunction in cancer and the development of CDK4/6 inhibitors as targeted therapies. His research characterized the molecular mechanisms of RB phosphorylation by CDK4/6-cyclin D complexes and how RB inactivation releases E2F transcription factors to drive S phase entry and cancer cell proliferation. He contributed to the preclinical and translational work supporting CDK4/6 inhibitor development that culminated in palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib FDA approvals for breast cancer and other malignancies. His work on biomarkers of CDK4/6 inhibitor response and mechanisms of acquired resistance informs current clinical management of CDK4/6 inhibitor-treated patients.
