George Demetri at Dana-Farber co-led the pivotal trials establishing imatinib as standard of care for gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), one of the first and most successful examples of molecularly targeted therapy in oncology. His foundational work on KIT and PDGFRA oncogenic signaling in GIST and his leadership of international sarcoma cooperative group trials have transformed management of this rare but paradigmatic cancer.
