Donald Ganem is a leading virologist whose work on Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8) elucidated the molecular mechanisms by which this virus causes Kaposi sarcoma and primary effusion lymphoma, cancers predominantly affecting immunocompromised populations in tropical and sub-Saharan African settings. His characterization of KSHV latent and lytic gene products that drive cell proliferation and angiogenesis has been foundational for understanding viral oncogenesis. His research has informed treatment strategies for AIDS-associated malignancies worldwide.
