Robert Gallo discovered HTLV-1 as the first human retrovirus and the cause of adult T-cell leukemia (ATLL) and co-discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS. He also co-discovered IL-2 as a T-cell growth factor. He co-founded the Institute of Human Virology and has shaped retrovirology and human cancer virology for decades.
