Silvia Formenti has been a pioneer in demonstrating and harnessing the abscopal effect through strategic combinations of radiation therapy with immunotherapy, conducting landmark clinical trials showing that focal radiation can convert the irradiated tumor into an in-situ vaccine when combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Her research has elucidated how radiation-induced immunogenic cell death generates tumor-specific immune responses capable of eradicating distant metastases.
