Anthony Epstein (deceased 2024) co-discovered Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) with Yvonne Barr and Bert Achong in 1964 from Burkitt lymphoma cell lines, establishing the first human tumor virus. His work at Bristol using electron microscopy identified the herpesvirus particles that founded the field of herpesvirus cancer biology. EBV is now linked to multiple cancers worldwide.
