Elwood Jensen (deceased 2012) discovered the estrogen receptor in the late 1950s, launching the field of nuclear hormone receptor biology and enabling endocrine therapy for breast cancer. He received the Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award. His foundational work also led to identification of the progesterone receptor.
