Brian Druker developed imatinib (Gleevec), the first successful targeted cancer therapy that transformed chronic myeloid leukemia from a fatal diagnosis to a manageable condition. His work proved that understanding the molecular basis of cancer could lead to rational drug design. Imatinib became the paradigm for all subsequent targeted cancer therapies.
