Douglas Hanahan co-authored the landmark 'Hallmarks of Cancer' papers, which define the organizing principles of cancer biology including tumor-stroma interactions. His research demonstrated how tumor cells co-opt surrounding stromal cells including fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and immune cells to support tumor progression. In his 2022 update of the hallmarks, he placed the tumor microenvironment and stromal interactions at center stage of cancer biology. His work continues to shape translational strategies targeting the tumor stroma.
