Douglas Hanahan co-authored the landmark Hallmarks of Cancer reviews with Robert Weinberg, which have shaped how scientists and clinicians understand malignant transformation. His 2022 updated hallmarks review incorporated enabling characteristics of the tumor microenvironment, including stromal contributions to malignancy. His experimental work has elucidated how pancreatic islet tumors develop and how the tumor microenvironment enables cancer progression. He continues to contribute theoretical frameworks and experimental insights into cancer biology and therapy.
