Inderjeet Dokal has been a world leader in dyskeratosis congenita research, discovering multiple causative genes and establishing telomere length measurement as a diagnostic tool for telomere biology disorders. His work connecting telomere maintenance defects to cancer predisposition has revealed how short telomeres paradoxically increase cancer risk through genomic instability and selection for telomere maintenance-independent survival pathways. He has defined the clinical spectrum and cancer surveillance requirements for patients with telomere biology disorders.
