Dennis Lo at CUHK discovered fetal cell-free DNA in maternal blood — the foundational finding that enabled non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). His subsequent work on cell-free DNA fragmentation patterns, nucleosome positioning, and EBV ctDNA-based screening for nasopharyngeal carcinoma has been foundational for liquid biopsy cancer diagnostics. His population-based NPC screening study using plasma EBV DNA demonstrated feasibility of blood-based cancer early detection.
