G. David Roodman has made foundational contributions to understanding myeloma bone disease — a major source of morbidity in myeloma causing osteolytic bone lesions, pathologic fractures, and hypercalcemia. His work elucidating the mechanisms of myeloma-stimulated osteoclast activation (RANKL pathway) and osteoblast suppression has been foundational for bisphosphonate and denosumab use in myeloma and for developing novel bone-targeted therapeutics.
