David Cibula
M.D., Ph.D.
Professor and Head, Gynecologic Oncology Center
👥Biography 个人简介
David Cibula is Professor and Head of the Gynecologic Oncology Center at Charles University and General University Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic. He is a world-recognized authority on the surgical management of cervical cancer, with particular expertise in sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy and radical hysterectomy. His contributions to SLN mapping in cervical cancer have been central to the global adoption of this technique as an alternative to complete pelvic lymphadenectomy, reducing surgical morbidity without compromising staging accuracy. Cibula led the SENTIX prospective multicenter trial, one of the largest and most rigorously designed studies evaluating the oncologic safety of SLN biopsy as the sole surgical staging procedure in early-stage cervical cancer. His research has addressed critical questions regarding detection rates, false-negative rates, and pathologic ultrastaging of sentinel nodes, providing the evidence base for international surgical guidelines. He has also made important contributions to understanding parametrial involvement in cervical cancer and criteria for less radical surgical approaches. In addition to cervical cancer surgery, Cibula has contributed to research on ovarian cancer surgical staging, fertility-preserving approaches in gynecologic oncology, and the integration of minimally invasive techniques. He is an active participant in European cooperative groups, holds leadership roles in ESGO (European Society of Gynaecological Oncology), and is a frequent invited educator at international surgical training programs.
🧪Research Fields 研究领域
🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Cervical Cancer
Led the SENTIX multicenter prospective trial and multiple validation studies establishing the oncologic safety and technical requirements of SLN biopsy for surgical staging in early-stage cervical cancer, reducing the need for full lymphadenectomy.
Radical Hysterectomy Technique and Classification
Contributed to the international Querleu-Morrow classification of radical hysterectomy, which standardized nomenclature and surgical extent across global gynecologic oncology practice.
Parametrial Involvement Assessment
Investigated criteria for predicting parametrial involvement in cervical cancer, supporting evidence-based decision-making regarding extent of surgical resection and eligibility for less radical procedures.
ESGO Clinical Practice Guidelines
Served as a steering committee member and author for ESGO guidelines on cervical cancer management, harmonizing evidence-based recommendations across European gynecologic oncology centers.
Representative Works 代表性著作
Sentinel lymph node biopsy in cervical cancer: results of the SENTIX prospective multicenter study
European Journal of Cancer (2020)
Reported results of the SENTIX trial demonstrating high detection rates and low false-negative rates for SLN biopsy in early-stage cervical cancer, supporting its integration into standard surgical staging practice.
The Querleu-Morrow classification of radical hysterectomy
The Lancet Oncology (2011)
Co-authored the international consensus classification of radical hysterectomy types that has become the global standard for describing surgical extent in cervical cancer management.
ESGO guidelines for the management of patients with cervical cancer
International Journal of Gynecological Cancer (2021)
Co-authored comprehensive ESGO clinical practice guidelines covering diagnosis, staging, surgical management, and adjuvant treatment of cervical cancer.
