David Cella at Northwestern developed the FACT (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy) scales — one of the most widely used quality-of-life measurement systems in cancer clinical trials. His patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments have been used in hundreds of pivotal cancer trials and have increasingly informed FDA labeling decisions, recognizing that patient-experienced benefits — not just tumor shrinkage — are critical outcome measures.
