David Basanta has pioneered the application of evolutionary game theory to model strategic interactions between cancer cell populations and their microenvironment. His game-theoretic models of bone metastasis revealed how cooperation and competition between cancer cells and osteoblasts/osteoclasts determine metastatic success. He has developed frameworks showing how treatment can be optimized by considering the evolutionary game played between different tumor cell types.
