David Baltimore shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for the discovery of reverse transcriptase — a discovery that fundamentally changed understanding of how RNA tumor viruses cause cancer and opened the field of molecular retrovirology. His subsequent contributions include discovering NF-kB (with Phillip Sharp) as a key transcription factor regulating immune response and cancer cell survival, making him one of the most impactful molecular biologists in cancer research history.
