His discovery of histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity in transcriptional activators established chromatin modification as a central mechanism of gene regulation. His foundational work underlies all of cancer epigenetics research and the development of HDAC inhibitors, BET inhibitors, and other epigenetic drugs.
