Curt Civin at Maryland discovered CD34 as the first useful surface marker for identifying hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. This discovery transformed hematopoietic stem cell transplantation by enabling purification of stem cells for clinical use, and CD34 remains the primary marker used in clinical stem cell transplant programs globally. His work laid the foundation for both normal hematopoietic stem cell biology and the discovery of leukemia stem cells.
