Pelayo Correa defined the Correa cascade describing the stepwise progression from chronic gastritis through intestinal metaplasia to gastric adenocarcinoma, providing the biological rationale for Helicobacter pylori eradication as gastric cancer prevention. His epidemiological studies in Colombia identified environmental and dietary risk factors that modify gastric cancer risk at each stage of the cascade. His work has informed global gastric cancer prevention strategies including H. pylori screening and eradication programs.
