Max Cooper established the distinct lineages of B cells and T cells in the 1960s, showing that antibody and cell mediated immunity derive from separate precursors. He also contributed to evolutionary studies of adaptive immunity including in jawless vertebrates. His work is foundational to modern hematology and immunology.
