Hans Clevers is the inventor of organoid technology, having discovered Lgr5+ intestinal stem cells and developed culture conditions that allow indefinite propagation of patient-derived tumor organoids for drug screening. His organoid biobanks spanning dozens of cancer types have enabled large-scale pharmacotyping studies that predict individual patient responses to chemotherapy. He has transformed cancer drug development from cell line-based to patient-representative model systems.
