Claus Azzalin discovered TERRA (telomeric repeat-containing RNA), the long non-coding RNA transcribed from telomeres that plays critical roles in telomere maintenance and ALT pathway activation. His work showed that TERRA forms R-loops at telomeres, promoting recombination-based telomere lengthening in ALT-positive cancers. He has revealed how TERRA regulates telomere heterochromatin and the DNA damage response at chromosome ends.
