Christopher Heaphy established the definitive link between ATRX/DAXX mutations and ALT activation in cancer. His seminal study of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and gliomas demonstrated that loss of ATRX or DAXX chromatin remodeling proteins is the primary genetic mechanism triggering ALT pathway activation. He developed ALT detection assays now used in clinical pathology to guide treatment decisions.
