Charles Sherr at St. Jude is a cell cycle pioneer who made fundamental contributions to understanding the CDK4/6-cyclin D-RB pathway that controls the G1/S transition. His discovery of CDK4, characterization of INK4 family CDK inhibitors (p16INK4a), and elucidation of how this pathway is disrupted in virtually all cancers provided the molecular basis for CDK4/6 inhibitor drugs (palbociclib, ribociclib, abemaciclib) — now standard of care in breast cancer.
