Charles Limoli at UC Irvine has made contributions to understanding radiation-induced cognitive impairment and neurotoxicity — major late effects of brain irradiation in cancer patients. His research on the mechanisms by which radiation damages neural stem cells, disrupts neurogenesis, and causes neuroinflammation provides the biological rationale for proton therapy (to reduce dose to uninvolved brain) and for neuroprotective strategies in patients requiring whole-brain radiation.
