Yuan Chang co-discovered Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) in 1994 and Merkel cell polyomavirus in 2008 with Patrick Moore. Her pathology training was crucial to selecting tumor samples for viral discovery approaches. Together they identified two human cancer viruses, a rare achievement in modern tumor virology.
