Chad Mirkin is the George B. Rathmann Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University and Director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology. He is one of the most decorated nanoscientists in history, cited by Nature as one of the most influential scientific minds globally. Mirkin invented Spherical Nucleic Acids (SNAs) — densely functionalized nanoparticles with oligonucleotide shells that have unique biological properties including cell entry without transfection agents, immunomodulatory properties, and tumor penetration. SNAs are being developed for cancer, glioblastoma, and immunotherapy applications. He invented Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN) — a tool for writing patterns at nanometer scale, and developed the nanoflares detection technology for detecting cancer-related RNAs in live cells. He has founded 12 companies and has over 1,200 patents.

Spherical Nucleic Acids (SNAs)

Invented SNAs — nanoparticle-oligonucleotide conjugates with unique properties: efficient cell uptake without toxicity, resistance to nucleases, and immunomodulatory activity. SNAs are used for gene silencing in tumors, neurological diseases, and as cancer immunotherapy agents.

Glioblastoma NU-0129 SNA Clinical Trial

Translated SNA technology to NU-0129 — the first nanotechnology to cross the blood-brain barrier and silence oncogenes in glioblastoma patients. First-in-human trial demonstrated brain penetration and safety.

Scanometric DNA Detection

Developed gold nanoparticle-based DNA detection with 100-fold greater sensitivity than fluorescent methods, enabling detection of cancer biomarkers from tiny blood samples.

Dip-Pen Nanolithography

Invented DPN — an AFM-based nanopatterning tool that writes features at 15nm resolution using molecular "ink," enabling fabrication of biosensor arrays and nanostructures.
