Caetano Reis e Sousa has defined the critical role of type 1 conventional dendritic cells (cDC1) in cross-presenting tumor antigens on MHC-I to activate CD8+ T cell responses against cancer. His work showed that BATF3-dependent cDC1s are essential for anti-tumor immunity and response to checkpoint immunotherapy. He has revealed how cDC1 innate immune sensing through cGAS-STING and TLR pathways initiates anti-tumor immune responses.
