Eduardo Bruera developed the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS), the most widely used symptom screening tool in cancer palliative care, and has been a leader in integrating palliative care into comprehensive cancer treatment from diagnosis rather than reserving it for end of life. His research on opioid rotation, cancer-related fatigue, delirium, and cachexia has established evidence-based management approaches adopted worldwide. He has built the largest academic palliative care department in the world at MD Anderson.
