Bruce Cheson at Georgetown developed the Lugano classification and its predecessors — the standardized response criteria for lymphomas used in all clinical trials and clinical practice globally. His contributions to lymphoma staging systems, response assessment definitions (complete response, partial response, stable disease, progressive disease), and the incorporation of PET/CT into lymphoma response assessment have been foundational for the entire lymphoma clinical research enterprise.
