Bernd Bodenmiller pioneered imaging mass cytometry (IMC) for spatial proteomics, enabling simultaneous detection of over 40 protein markers in tissue sections at subcellular resolution. His application of IMC to breast cancer revealed that the spatial organization of immune and stromal cells, rather than their mere abundance, determines clinical outcome. His systematic mapping of tumor microenvironment architecture has identified spatial biomarkers predictive of treatment response that are invisible to bulk tissue analysis.
